Smart assessment and guided education with responsible AI
Introducing SAGE-RAI: responsible generative AI for scalable, personalised tutoring and assessment.
Inspired by Bloom’s work on the power of one-to-one tutoring, SAGE-RAI (Smart Assessment and Guided Education with Responsible AI) explores whether responsible generative AI can help close the gap between individual tutoring and teaching at scale.
This paper sets out the project vision: integrating generative AI into tutoring so large cohorts can get tailored content and constructive feedback, while responsible AI practices address risks such as misinformation, copyright infringement and bias. The work is a collaboration between The Open University’s Knowledge Media Institute and the Open Data Institute.
It is the foundational publication for the programme of work that later produced learner studies and transparent RAG design patterns — grounding ODI’s applied research on AI in professional education.
