Course prerequisites

Some knowledge of open data is required.

Additionally, you can take a look at the first two eLearning modules from our FREE Open Data Essentials course. Each module will take around 10 minutes to complete.

  • Confidently work within your own ecosystems and begin to create strategies for building healthy data ecosystems.
  • Correctly classify data as open, shared and closed and apply appropriate licences or data sharing agreements to maximise the impact from data
  • Minimise risk and maximise opportunities when working with personal data.
  • Improve the quality and interoperability of data and help others to overcome fears about data quality.

Course Sessions

Data ecosystems: Strategies for change and barriers to success

The aim of this session is to enable participants to confidently work within their own ecosystems and begin to apply ecosystem mapping and theories of change to help create strategies for building healthy data ecosystems.

By the end of this session participants will have:

  • Identified a number of fears and barriers that prevent data being shared as openly as possible
  • Devised a number of potential activities that help overcome common fears and barriers and form these into a theory of change.
  • Created a simple open data ecosystem map in order to prioritise actors to be involved in activities
Understanding the role of open, shared and closed data in a data ecosystem

The aim of this session is to enable participants to correctly classify data as open, shared and closed. This session focuses on the legal aspects of accessing and providing access to data and how proper licenses can protect and benefit both the publisher and user of data.

By the end of this session participants will be able to:

  • List the factors that determine if data should be open, shared or closed.
  • Apply these factors to construct a data spectrum.
  • List the core components of a open, shared and closed license for data
  • Describe a number of existing licenses that support wider data sharing
Working with personal data

The aim of this session is to enable participants to help organisations minimise risk and maximise opportunities when working with personal data.This session addresses the myths and misconceptions around what personal data is and isn't, boosts confidence in data protection regulations and equip participants with practical steps that can be shared with others to minimise risk and maximising opportunities when working with personal data.

By the end of this session participants will be able to:

  • Identify different types of personal data
  • Describe the role of data protection regulations
  • Explain the rights of data owners, organisations and individuals over personal data
  • Apply a number of techniques to minimise risk and maximise opportunities when working with personal data
Improving the quality and interoperability of data

The aim of this session is to enable participants to work with organisations to overcome fears about the quality of data and apply tools and techniques to improve the quality and interoperability of data.

By the end of this session participants will be able to:

  • Identify common quality issues in data
  • Describe the role of standards in open data
  • Apply a number of techniques to improve the quality and interoperability of data
